Build an outline from your sources

Build an outline from these sources. ***Structure from what is in them, not from a template.***

1. **Find what the sources actually organize around.** ***If they share a structure, say so; if they do not, that difference is itself a finding***
2. **Per section:** what it covers / ***which sources support it*** / **how much material exists**
3. ***Mark sections supported by only one source.* **They look identical to well-supported ones in a finished outline**
4. ***Mark sections where the sources conflict.* **That is a section to write carefully, not to smooth over**
5. **Mark sections I would have to write from outside the sources** — ***say so explicitly.* **That is where the grounding ends**

**Also:**
- ***What the sources cover that my outline has no place for*** — **often the most interesting material**
- **What my outline needs and the sources do not have** — ***the gap to fill before writing***
- **Where the material is thin enough that the section should be merged or cut**
- **The order** — ***what has to be established before what***
